St. Mary’s University is honored to partner with the Archdiocese of San Antonio on our Cristero Centennial Project. One hundred years ago, Mexicans persecuted by anti-clerical policies sought sanctuary in San Antonio. Mexican priests, nuns, bishops, and even the Archbishop arrived, destitute and dependent on the goodwill of Texans just as Texans were targeting and ousting Mexican Americans. For Catholics to champion Mexicans was to risk antagonizing fellow and sister San Antonians. St. Mary’s University historian, Dr. Teresa Van Hoy, dreamed of finding the documents attesting to Catholic charity and courage and share the documents with scholars and lay people on both sides of the border, as the Centennial approaches. Thanks to funding from the O’Connor endowment, the commitment of historian, Santos Mencio, and the mentorship of Director Sanchez Kisser from the Archdiocese of San Antonio, we are pleased to launch this digital collection. It contains nearly 150 documents and a finding aid. May it be a model for partnerships between universities and Catholic archives and a wonderful tribute to solidarity and sacrifice between Mexicans and Americans on both sides of the border.
